Do You Need an Accountability Partner?

Are you like me?

I have big dreams and set big goals.  But actually working on them or taking action usually starts out great but then fizzles out?

Take me for instance with working out.

Starts out amazing. I plan (I looooovvvve planning ?) and get everything ready and prepped.  And that works for about 3 days.

Maybe it’s the excitement, the thrill of the planning (or is that just me), the realization that it’s not easy, the fact that I haven’t made it a habit and didn’t have accountability to anyone except myself.

I go through this cycle over and over.  I get all pumped and get started then fizzle out.  When that happens, I go down the negative self-talk road.

“Like get it together Nichole.  You need to lose some weight and get in shape and you’re never gonna do that sitting in front of your computer.  Eating healthy most of the time isn’t enough for you. Or Nichole, you know exactly what you need to do, why can’t you just get your shit together and do it.  What’s wrong with you, you must not want it badly enough.”

Is this ringing any bells?  I have a feeling I’m not the only one that goes down that road and not just with working out.

The reason I know I can do it is because I used to be a workout crazy person.  Every day I would go to the gym, do yoga or go on a hike or something.

I noticed it first started to change when I moved to Dallas.  I would have to force myself to go to the gym.

The gym was boring and I missed being outside and on or near the water like my workouts on Austin.  But I forced myself to go anyway and finally got into the habit.

I also started trying new things like cycle classes, hot yoga instead of my usual style, barre classes, tennis and I really had fun with it and had a groove.

Then I had kids.

Let’s just say they changed everything.

And to top it off my energy levels were running on fumes and I was gaining weight because at that same time I found out I had a thyroid disease and polycystic ovarian syndrome.  Which are both notorious for weight gain.

So with the cards stacked against me, I felt even more defeated.  Like maybe I should throw my hands up in defeat and eat whatever the hell I wanted. But I knew that wasn’t the answer either.

I tried and tried to do it all by myself but I just couldn’t and I couldn’t repeat that cycle any longer.

So I hired a health coach.  I found someone that understood my issues and wasn’t trying to get me to buy any of her supplements.

We came up with a plan together that seemed reasonable and it was my job to implement it.

The thing that kept me following the plan was the fact that she was checking in on my every single Thursday and I was paying her.

I have to have a money in the game or I don’t take it very seriously.  I can guarantee that if I would have been offered this for free I wouldn’t have stuck with it.  And that’s true for most of us.

This is why sites like Healthywage.com exist because we need to feel invested in the process.

This same cycle happens to us in our businesses too.

We set big goals and then get bogged down in the day to day aspects of it.  Our big goals get pushed to the side and they never get accomplished.

We all need accountability.  Whether it’s a mastermind group, a coach, accountability partner, or a friend that will call you out on your BS and not accept any of your justifications or even putting it out on a social platform for all to see.

If you are serious about wanting to reach your goals, you need two things:

1) a solid strategy

2) accountability.

You can’t rely on willpower, I’m not sure it even exists.  All of that negative self-talk will get you nowhere.  In fact, it will probably keep you from reaching your goals.

Having the proper support in place helps you maximize and reach your goals a lot sooner than if you do it alone. Trust me, I’ve taken the long way around this and wish I could go back in time and slap myself.

I want you all to be set up for success and not have to waste all the time or make the mistakes that I did.

Accountability = Success
