Why I think you should travel with your kids.

So take whatever romanticized idea of a family vacation and toss it right out.  Traveling with your kids is not for the weak. But it is amazing and opens the world to them and I want you to travel with your kids.

Ok so you might have young kids, what’s the point right?  They’ll never remember any of it anyway.

Well, we are literally learning from the day we are born, like little sponges. So it’s totally not wasted on littles.

We took our kids to Vietnam 2 years ago for my sister-in-law’s wedding.  At that time, they were almost 6, 3 and 20 months. My oldest remembers a lot, my middle guy and little remember probably because of the stories we tell with our pictures.

But they talk about it all of the time.

Going abroad or even just to different places in the US exposes them to different people, cultures and situations.

It can help open their eyes to the larger world around them.

Vietnam showed my kids real poverty and that not everyone has food every day and that some cities have chickens running wild in the streets or slaughter animals on the side of the road and that people dress differently, speak different languages and eat different foods.

They learn that even though we all look different, we are all the same.

We went to a Buddhist temple and saw monks chanting, we saw people dressed in strange clothing and speaking with passion in a different language.

It also helps them become more adaptable and flexible.  Trust me, you cannot take everything you have at home with you and make every situation ideal.

Naps will get messed up, using devices might happen a little more than you want or they might not work at all, you might think that you’ll be able to find diapers or wipes but you can’t, sleeping might be a little tough and time change and jet lag are no joke.

The first couple of nights in Vietnam were horrible.  I wear a Fitbit and it said I was woken up 56 times. I basically got no sleep.

But you roll with it.

Because it’s worth it.  To see you kiddos eyes light up when they are just looking around at new and different places and things.

Being in new and different places also helps them try new things.  Trust me, my kids ate things in Vietnam that I could never get them to try at home.

Also, they were so fascinated with the airplanes, boats, taxis and motorbikes.  They would ask so many questions about them and tell so many stories it was amazing.

And when we got home they ran to map in my office and wanted to point to the places that we had been to and then talk about it and look at pictures.

I feel that traveling has helped expand the boundaries of their minds and that they feel like there is much more than the little bubble that we live in.

One of the biggest things I love about it is that it instills a love of travel and adventure.

This is something I’ve had since my tween years and I am so happy that I have been able to pass that on to my kids.

My parents used to take my sister and me on some kind of vacation every summer.  Whether it was to a Texas beach, camping in a state park, Six Flags, Disney (once), or on a two-week camping trip through Colorado and New Mexico.

We never did anything lavish but we always went.  I have wonderful memories of all of the family time and the different places and people we saw.  And we never left the country.

The travel bug bit me when I was a kid so when I had the opportunity to travel to the US Virgin Islands on a missions trip with my Youth Group when I was 15, I jumped on it.  I went for 7 days. I fell in love with travel.

I knew from that moment on that I would travel the world.

Since then, I’ve traveled all over the US, Hawaii, Canada, Mexico, Peru, Belize, Honduras, all over the Caribbean, all of western Europe, Dubai and Vietnam.  And I’m not done.

I have so many more travel plans and I can’t wait to show more of the world to my kids.  And have amazing experiences with them.

So far, we’ve taken our kids to:

Mexico – Rivera Maya ??

Grand Canyon

San Diego

Chicago

Vietnam ??

Maui, Hawaii

Big Sur, CA

This year we are taking them to:

Rosemary Beach, Florida

Cabo San Lucas, Mexico ??

And we plan to take them all over the world. ✈️

I want to know, do you travel with your kids? Where have you taken your kids?  What’s your favorite place? Where do you want to go?
